On-Line Academy Activity at Great Sand Dunes (Registration Required)

LEARNING & FUN. On Saturday, October 4, OLA students and their families are invited to participate in an educational activity at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Mr. Oden, a former science teacher and park ranger, will lead "Hands in the Sand", an activity where participants learn about the geologic history of Great Sand Dunes and some of the unique life forms that live there.

Activities include looking at the sand through portable microscopes, seeing insects that live only on the dunes, participating in hands-on activities relating to dunes formation, and holding a few "surprises" that very few people get to touch in their lifetimes.

WHERE TO MEET. Participants should meet promptly at 10:00 AM at the MAIN DUNES PARKING LOT (you will see Mr. Oden and his equipment near the boardwalk that leads out to the dunes). From there, we will walk about a third of a mile out onto the dunes for the activity.

WHAT ELSE? After the activity, participants will have the choice of joining a group to hike to the top of High Dune (if there is enough interest), exploring the lower dunes or checking out the Visitors Center. Then those who would like to picnic will have lunch in the picnic area by the dunes.

TRANSPORTATION. Students will need to have their own transportation. Parents and siblings are invited to participate in the activity.

ENTRANCE FEES. Mr. Oden was granted a fee waiver for all participants in this activity. When you go through the entrance station, tell the attendant that you are here for the On-Line Academy School Activity and you will not be charged to enter the park.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING. Dress in layers. Be prepared for a cold, windy day or a hot, still day, regardless of the weather forecast. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Hats and sunscreen are a good idea. Bring a picnic lunch. And definitely bring a water bottle.

QUESTIONS?  Contact Mr. Oden at dirk@monte.k12.co.us. Put "Dunes Question" in the subject line.

Please complete the brief form below to register for this event.

Note: In the event of bad weather, Mr. Oden has a conference room reserved at the Visitors Center to present an alternative program.

Participants must register in advance. Click here (or paste the below address in your browser) to register:
