Message from Superintendent Scott Wiedeman

Good Morning Monte Vista School District and Community

With spring break occurring next week we want to make sure we don’t make a quick decision. After many hours of discussion with our District Wellness Team, School Board and input from our local health experts we feel it is best to head in this direction. We will continue to monitor the situation and make decisions based on new information. We will notify and communicate our plan before school is to come back in session on March 23, 2020.

On March 11 the Colorado Department of Health and Environment issued minimum guidelines about when school MUST close should the COVID-19 emerge:

* Upon the first verified case of staff or student infection in a particular school, a 72-hour closure is required.

* Upon the second verified case of staff or student infection in a particular school, an additional 72-hour closure is required.

* Upon the third verified case of staff or student infection in a particular school, a 14-day closure is required.

* Any District with 3 verified cases in a 30-day period equals a 14 day closure.

As many schools close despite not having a single verified case of the virus, and seek to help their communities to not spread the virus that could place a great deal of stress on our local health providers, we are not making rushed decisions. Please note that if our local health providers advise us to close schools we will certainly comply. As of today there are no confirmed cases in the San Luis Valley.

If schools should close, please note that parents of students K-5 will be asked to pick up packets from their perspective schools. You will be contacted by your child's school and given more detailed information should we need your support in your child's learning.

In grades 6-12 our teachers are prepared to give quality instruction on-line through google classroom, google meets and email. Although these aren’t the ideal situations we look for, we believe this will help your student move forward academically. Should we have to go to an on-line format and your child has no internet access, please call your building leaders. We will have information on how and how we can accommodate you if the situation arises. We would also like to ask community support in requesting our local internet service providers to offer free or low cost internet access during this time of crisis.

Thank you for being patient and working with us through this time. One thing is clear, spring break is here. Please make sure to have fun, run and play, and more importantly, enjoy your time with family. Not to worry, we will communicate with you when the time comes!!
