Dunes WorkersWe are planning an Earth Day Activity to Great Sand Dunes Nat’l Park on Tuesday Apr. 22, 2014 for planting trees as a service learning project for students from the On-Line Academy and the DELTA Center.

We will arrive at the dunes about 9:00AM and stay there until about 2:00PM.

For participation students will earn:  a Certificate of Service, 4 hrs of PE credit and class Assignment credit.

Our task for the day will be to transplant trees in the area surrounding the new parking lot. This will provide shade, habitat and help reduce erosion in the area.

Online students living in the area may ride the bus from our offices to the dunes and back. A signed permission slip (see Dunes 2014 Forms below and under helpful links on the left side of the home page) is required for that. We will leave at 8:00AM and return at 3:00PM.

Parents of online students may also drive their students to the dunes and meet us there if they wish. Parents are welcome to participate in all activities.

The following items will be needed for this fun outdoor activity.
Bring plenty of water to drink.
Bring snacks for break times to keep your energy up.
       Work clothes
       Work gloves
       Hat
       Sun screen
       Work shoes or boots.
       Dress in layers

Weather in the Valley can change drastically in a short amount of time.  We will be transplanting trees from one area of the Park to another which involves shovel work so plan well.

Our tentative schedule is to arrive at the Dunes at about 9:00am and begin activities at 9:30am.
Lunch will be provided by Great Sand Dunes rangers and served at about 12:30pm.
We will leave the Dunes at about 2:15pm to arrive back in Monte Vista by 3:00pm.

It is important to understand this is a school activity for credit. For students to participate and earn credit there are three requirements:

1. Prior to the trip, be sure you are passing at least three of your core classes. If not, you will not be able to participate.
2. Students will need to have a signed permission slip from their parent/guardian.
3. Be active participants in the day’s activities at the Dunes.

It is very important that we be able to have a head count prior to the trip. Students need to bring or send a notice of your signed parent/guardian permission by Thursday Apr. 17. Also, we need to know if Parents/Guardians are planning to attend for food planning purposes.

Please contact Roger Dawson (rogerd@monte.k12.co.us) 719-852-2212 with any questions about our trip.

We are looking forward to a fun day and an opportunity to help contribute to our great outdoors.
