We had a fun time at Great Sand Dunes National Park Saturday! We learned how the dunes formed and what keeps them where they are. We looked at the sand through microscopes, sorted the sand with a sieve, extracted magnetite with a magnet, examined a fulgurite (German for lightning rock), looked at some insects that are found only at the dunes, learned how kangaroo rats survive in a difficult environment, and held a real mammoth tooth. Then, a group of us climbed to the top of high dune. It was a great time with a great bunch of students!
